Springfield, MA - Senior Amanda Sgueglia scored the game-winning goal for the Union College women's soccer team Wednesday against Western New England University, earning the Garnet Chargers a 1-0 victory.

After a goal-line kick from Western New England University sailed over the midfield line, Union College put the ball back in play. After four Union touches to get the ball back to the offense, Squiglia took advantage of a defender and goalie slightly off the goal line to score the game-winning goal from well over 18 yards out to give Union College a 1-0 lead.

The Garnet Chargers didn't stop there. Union College scored four more goals before the halftime break, including three on target, and held the advantage in shots (7-1), shots on goal (5-0) and corner kicks (4-2) at halftime. First-year Maya Koster took over for 10th-grader Rachel Berliner in the second half and pounced on three second-half shots to preserve the win.

Squiglia's first goal of the season became the second game-winning goal of her career, as the senior also scored the game-winning goal in Union's game against Utica last September, helping Union College to a 1-0 win. This season, the senior sits in fourth place on the team with three points.

Union College (3-3-2) will return to Liberty League play on Saturday when they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend on campus. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m. at College Park Field Stadium.
